Oil Painting On Canvas From The Second Half Of The 19th Century By Jules Ferdinand Medard (1855–1925)
Artist: Jules Ferdinad Medard 1855 - 1925
An oil-on-canvas still life painting from the second half of the 19th century, of French origin. At the center of the painting, as the focal point, is a large shell—"a giant Strombus or similar"—surrounded by flowers such as roses, peonies, mimosas, and other small blooms. Against the dark background stand out a golden jug and a container, elements typical of 18th- and 19th-century compositions used to create contrast and depth in the work. The painting perfectly reflects the influence of European still lifes, with particular attention to realistic rendering, texture, and a dramatic use of light reminiscent of the pictorial tradition of the period. The painting in question is signed and dated J. Medard 1880 in the lower right corner; it is still on the original canvas and is set in a beautiful gilded frame, also of French origin, featuring fine bas-relief work at the four corners.
