An Exceptional Art Nouveau Silver Lamp By Orivit Ag, Cologne, Germany 1904
ORIVIT AG, Cologne, circa 1904-1905
Model No. 135
An exceptional Art Nouveau silver lamp by ORIVIT AG, Cologne (Germany), circa 1904/05.
This exceptional four-arm lamp is among the most technically and artistically accomplished achievements of Orivit AG, and is among the most important known examples of German Art Nouveau in silver.
Designed as a monumental display piece, it combines solid silver, cut crystal and amethyst cabochons in a composition of great complexity and remarkable elegance. The central shaft incorporates a crystal core ending in a faceted floral shape, evoking the tradition of European prestige objects.
The crystal elements feature a pronounced diamond cut with strong light refraction and are reminiscent in shape of stylized thistle flowers. The light heads, made entirely of cut crystal, are a particularly refined material solution. The silver arms, with their organic lines, are adorned with amethyst cabochons integrated into the composition.
This model is among the most elaborate of Orivit's silver production and represents an evolution of the metal candelabra model no. 2569 (Exposition Universelle, Paris 1900). Compared to the latter, it reaches a higher level thanks to the use of precious materials.
The construction is technically complex, with a central crystal core and sophisticated integration of silver and glass. Variations in the weight of the crystal elements indicate individual manufacture rather than mass production, suggesting a very limited output.
This type of piece is very popular with the public.
This type of object was probably intended for international exhibitions or prestigious presentations, to demonstrate the technical and artistic capabilities of the house.
A remarkable display piece of international Art Nouveau circa 1904.
