Walnut wood, 71 x 158.5 x 56 cm
18th-century Trentino cabinetmaking finds an admirable synthesis in this piece of furniture, crafted from fine walnut wood, a wood of choice for its strength and ability to accommodate detailed carvings. The choice of material is highlighted by the deep brown hue of the patina and the compact grain of the wood, particularly visible on the top surface, which consists of wide, solid planks. The front panel is distinguished by a geometrically rigorous design of great charm, where a double line, incised with small dotted strokes, outlines a large central rhombus. Within this frame stands out a circular rosette carved in relief, characterized by fleshy petals and a well-defined central core. On either side of the rhombus, the surface is enriched by four elegant spiral motifs, evoking solar symbolism and the ancient decorative traditions of the Alpine valleys. The corner posts are treated with particular sculptural care: they appear as pilasters richly decorated with three overlapping rosettes, connected by a stylized leaf motif that runs along the entire vertical profile. Below the edge of the lid, a band of engraved notches adds a further element of compositional rhythm, connecting the horizontal plane to the body of the piece. The base consists of a tall, shaped plinth, whose curvilinear profiles create an interplay of solid and void spaces that lends momentum to the massive structure, avoiding a sense of excessive heaviness.
