Allegory Of Charity - Oak Sculpture In High Relief, Partial Round - Travail Fr

Important carved oak sculpture in high relief, with arched gendarme hat top, representing an allegory of Charity.

The female figure, treated in the antique style, is depicted standing, her hand placed on her chest in a gesture of compassion and moral elevation.

To her left, a brazier with powerfully sculpted flames evokes the sacred fire, symbol of ardent charity. With her other hand, she leans on a fluted column, a classic element in the decorative vocabulary of the period.

The sculptural treatment of the sculpture, which is a key element in the design of this piece, is also a key element in the decorative vocabulary of the period.

The treatment of the sculpture is particularly remarkable: the figure stands out strongly from the background, with partial work in the round on the bust and upper draperies, giving the whole a very assertive sculptural presence.

The scene is set in an architectural niche, surmounted by a wide canopy with knotted curtains, bringing a theatrical effect characteristic of the decorative productions of the second half of the 16th century, at the transition from Rococo taste to Neoclassicism.

The altar fire, treated with vigor, as well as the base adorned with a sculpted garland, testify to mastered craftsmanship and a real sense of volume.

Beautiful old patina, with traces of use and wear consistent with the period.

Visible cracks and slight missing parts, without detracting from the overall readability.

This carving was most likely intended for a piece of woodwork or architectural decoration (door top, niche or religious or civil furniture), rather than as a stand-alone sculpture.

A decorative work of fine presence, both classical and expressive, relatively atypical on the market.
