Funny Japanese Lacquered Wooden Tobacco Jar Depicting A Daruma, Circa 1880

A charming and original Japanese tobacco jar dating from the late 19th century, around 1880, carved from wood and richly lacquered.

It depicts a kneeling figure, most likely Daruma, an iconic figure of Japanese Zen Buddhism, recognizable by his deliberately scowling face, his intense gaze with furibo eyes, and his characterful expression. His crouched posture, hands clasped in front of him, and the generous folds of his cloak give him a presence that is as amusing as it is expressive.

The hat forms the lid of the jar, fitting perfectly onto the body of the sculpture. The interior is hollowed out to hold tobacco, making this piece both a utilitarian and decorative object.

The polychrome paint and original lacquer display a beautiful patina of age, with natural wear that enhances the charm and authenticity of this object. Delicate decorative highlights on the coat also attest to the care taken in its creation.
