Italian Caprice With Putti And Medici Vase, Oil On Canvas Signed And Dated 1866

Artist: Silvie Da Tommaso (?)

Charming Italian oil on canvas signed and dated 1866, bearing a red signature we read "Silvie de Tommaso" on the base of the Medici vase.

The composition depicts several putti having fun around an imposing Medici vase adorned with neoclassical-inspired bas-reliefs. One of them helps his companions to climb, while another observes the scene, creating an ensemble full of movement and freshness.

In the background unfold the gardens of an elegant Palladian villa embellished with monumental statues, flowerbeds and a fountain. The luminous colors and vivid execution give the work a particularly seductive character.

Inscribed in a large oval format, the painting is presented in its elegant wood and gilded stucco frame decorated with palmettes in the spandrels.

This work testifies to the mid-19ᵉ century taste for idealized scenes inspired by classical Italy and is a high-quality decorative element.
