Announcing Angel With A Trumpet – Brittany, Late 17th / Early 18th Century

A beautiful carved and polychrome wooden sculpture depicting an announcing angel blowing a trumpet, in a dynamic and theatrical pose.The sculpture, 60 cm tall, features a particularly lively rendering of movement, with the body slightly swaying, the arms spread wide, and deep folds in the drapery. The face, with its youthful and expressive features, is characteristic of Breton religious statuary from this period.The wings were attached separately, as evidenced by the two recesses carved into the back. The construction in several parts—wings, arms, and attribute—is typical of religious wooden statuary from this era.The original polychrome paint, now heavily weathered, retains beautiful traces of its original coloring. The sculpture shows signs of wear, a few chips and losses consistent with its age, as well as old signs of wood-boring insect damage.The trumpet is preserved with the sculpture. The statue is mounted on a base composed of antique elements and a more recent assembly, incorporating, in particular, decorative elements such as lambrequins, which are themselves antique.
