Dragoon Helmet, Model 1858, Second Empire Napoleon III / Third Republic French Cavalry

Beautiful Model 1858 troop helmet from the 9th Dragoon Regiment, dated 1871.
This type of helmet was used by French dragoon regiments during the Second Empire until the beginning of the Third Republic (circa 1872/1874).
Beautiful brass skull, marked on the back (see photo):
1/ "9D" for an assignment to the 9th Dragoon Regiment.
2/ "1871" for the year of manufacture.
3/ "684", service number of the dragooner who wore this helmet.
The skull is surmounted by a high crest, also in brass, decorated with a medusa mask, a grenade, a "marmoset" with black horsehair puff and, on the sides, gadroons and palmettes.
The helmet  features its original fabric band imitating panther skin -- typical of the 1858 model.
Chinstraps with brass rings mounted on black leather.
Original black horsehair mane.
Original black leather liner. The brass visor and neck-cover are lined on the inside with leather.
Total height 33 cm excluding mane.
Superb collector's item in very good overall condition with a beautiful patina. Wear consistent with its age. Restoration to the liner and chinstraps. Black horsehair puff and plume have been later replaced.
