Large Icon Of The Prophet Elijah, Russia 18th Century / Old Testament

Luminous and large icon of the Ascension of the prophet Elijah. It dates from the end of the 18th century or the beginning of the 19th century -- around 1780/1820 -- and comes from the Volga region of Russia.
In this very elaborate composition, we see, in the center of the icon, Elijah living as a hermit in a cave in the desert. At the top of the composition, Elijah, called by God, miraculously flies to heaven in a ball of fire on a chariot drawn by winged horses. Other miniature scenes represent stages of the prophet's life on earth.
In the Byzantine style, the work is finely painted in tempera in rich and vibrant colors on a wooden panel. Furthermore, the background is entirely decorated with splendid gilding.
Good general original condition. Some small losses, cracks and wear of time.
