Mirror, Regency, Gilded Wood, France, 1715-1740
Mirror in gilded wood. Its most striking feature is its richly carved crown, with a central Regency-style shell motif, surrounded by acanthus leaves and subtle openwork cut-outs. The frame is a rectangle surmounted by a segmental arch. The surface of the frame is decorated using the guilloche technique (fine mesh in the background) and embossed ornaments in the shape of leaves and flowers. The inner edge of the frame is adorned with a classic pearl motif. The mirror has its original panel showing clear traces of oxidation of the silver/mercury layer.
