Miroku Bosatsu Mask, Japan, 19th-20th Centuries
This mask represents the head of the bodhisattva Maitreya (Japanese: Miroku Bosatsu). The original on which this mask is based is a famous wooden sculpture from the 7th century (Asuka period), preserved at the Chūgū-ji temple in Nara. The mask is covered in plaster, gilding and colorful polychromy; its heart is made of wood or plaster, which is difficult to determine.
