Pair Of Inlaid Bronze Lamps, Susse Frères, Japan, France, 2nd Half Of The 19th Century.
Pair of bronze and other metal vases, probably made in Japan, with French gilt bronze fittings. The bodies of the vases are adorned with multicolored metal inlay depicting fauna and flora motifs: precisely reproduced birds amid flowering branches of camellias or peonies. Various metal alloys (silver, copper, gilding, dark patinas) were used for the decoration, giving the composition a three-dimensional, painterly appearance. The necks of the vases are adorned with stylized ears in relief, in the shape of the heads of mythical creatures, as well as a central motif representing a stylized symbol of longevity/happiness. Signature on burner neck: "SUSSE Fes Edrs" (Susse Frères Éditeurs) and inscription "SANS GARANTIE DU GOUVTe" (S.G.D.G. - French patent mark). The Susse brothers' foundry, founded in Paris, was one of the most important and prestigious artistic French manufacturers of the 19th century, supplying objects to the aristocracy and to the world's fairs. The neck of the burner itself is in the form of an elaborate openwork relief, decorated with an oriental dragon motif. The bodies of the vases rest on gilded bronze bases. The openwork plinth, with its meandering geometric pattern, rests on elephant-head feet.
