Saint Bernardine Of Siena In His Study Oil On Canvas, 15th Century
Charming religious painting depicting Saint Bernardine of Siena, 15th-century Franciscan monk, famous preacher and great propagator of Christ's monogram "IHS", here featured several times in the composition.
The saint is depicted in his study, seated in front of a desk covered with a red sheet, quill in hand, absorbed in writing. His gaze rises to a celestial apparition composed of cherubs' heads emerging from the clouds, framing the radiant monogram. To the right, two putti hold a banner also bearing the "IHS" symbol, reinforcing the devotional dimension of the scene.
The composition, balanced and narrative, is part of a Franciscan iconographic tradition that was widespread in the 16th and 18th centuries. Note the warm treatment of the palette, dominated by browns and ochres, as well as the softness of the faces and the intimate character of the scene.
Work from the XVille siécle, probably of Italian school or Italian influence.
