Imposing Monumental Italian Alabaster Vase In The Spirit Of The Grand Tour, Early 20th Century
An Italian decorative vase in translucent alabaster executed at the end of the 19th century beginning of the 20th century in the spirit of memories of the Grand Tour and the decorations of Palladian villas.
Indeed we find details of sculpture typical of the motifs of classical Italy with great attention to detail.
Indeed this vase is transportable and separates into three parts, the square base then the body of the vase extremely sculpted and comprising two handles and finally the neck decorated with an openwork frieze of pearls and a crown of acanthus leaves on the edge of the neck.
Look carefully at the details and the quality of the sculpture, on the pot-bellied part of the vase we find a caduceus under a tureen surrounded by animals and floral motifs.
The handles present dolphins and griffins at the top, all in an openwork sculpture and decorated with openwork floral motifs too.
On the neck under the crown of acanthus leaves and pearls At the narrowest point we find a crown of roses of great finesse.
The pot-bellied part is decorated with draperies of floral motifs, fantastic animals and snakes around the caduceus.
Below on the pedestal we find a crown of finely worked and openwork acanthus leaves.
The three-level square base is more sober, as is the back with only a frieze of engraved interlacing.
The alabaster used is of great purity and very translucent to electric light or to sunlight which passes through it without problem, illuminating the body and highlighting all these motifs.
No restoration to report, excellent condition and beautiful old patina, just a few minor, barely visible chips and a non-through crack inside the neck, cracks that are regularly found in alabaster.
A spectacular ornamental vase with sculptural details entirely in the spirit of the Grand Tour and the Paladian villas.
Dimensions:
122 cm high 27 cm by 27 cm square at the base.
