Patinated Bronze Bhairava-style Mask — Probably Nepal, 20th Century
A patinated bronze mask depicting an angry face, likely inspired by Bhairava, a fearsome manifestation of Shiva in the Nepalese tradition.
The face, modeled in high relief, features protruding eyes beneath fiery eyebrows, a powerful nose, and an open mouth revealing fangs and a long, hanging tongue.
A full, flaming mane frames the head, which is crowned with a wreath adorned with three skulls. Two snakes with coiled bodies and detailed scales extend on either side of the face, giving the figure a particularly expressive silhouette.
The dark brown patina, with nearly black hues, reveals lighter highlights on the reliefs, emphasizing the modeling and the richness of the decoration.
Overall in fine condition, with some wear and variations in the patina. The hollow back is fitted with a hanging mechanism.
