A rare statuary representation probably of Saint Thomas Aquinas.
A master of scholastic philosophy and Catholic theology, born in 1225 near Aquinas in the Kingdom of Sicily.
Died in 1274 at the Abbey of Fossanova near Priverno. He was canonized in 1323 by John XXII. He is buried in Toulouse in the Church of the Jacobins.
Our large statue represents the saint wearing the tonsure and holding the quill in the Benedictine habit: he holds the quill in his left hand and probably held a book in his right hand, the latter having disappeared today.
The face is superb and has retained its original polychromy as well as his hands, which is rare for a statue of the early 18th century of this size.
The face is very interesting and finely sculpted, he has his mouth open as if ready to explain his ideas. His clothing is very finely worked and sculpted the drapery is superbly sculpted moreover at the front as at the back of the statue.
the collar, the lapels of the clothes and the coat are gilded with a reprise of floral elements and decorations in relief in this gilding, the coat is of an incredible finesse, look carefully at the photos.
a rare representation of one of the principal saint philosophers of the church.
