A magnificent devotional and intimate S-shaped sculpture, retaining its original polychromy.
Mary is depicted with her hands clasped symmetrically, which suggests that this is the Virgin Mary. The symmetrical position of the hands expresses virginal perfection, while their asymmetrical position represents imperfection and emotional turmoil, thus characterizing the more earthly figure of Mary Magdalene.
