Capipote, Virgin Of The Seven Sorrows Of The 19th Century

A beautiful Virgin of the Seven Sorrows dating from the first half of the 19th century.

This is a lovely devotional statue—and likely one used in processions—consisting of a slightly articulated wooden figure with a finely carved face, hands, and feet.
The rest of the sculpture is much more rudimentary, as it was intended to be dressed.
The arms are articulated.
In other words, a capipote!
She retains her original garments, consisting of several white petticoats over which rests a large black velvet dress and a large taffeta mantilla edged with lace.
There are a few wax stains on the velvet and a few holes in the taffeta.
She wears a large gilded wooden crown and has a polychrome wooden “Heart of the Seven Sorrows” on her chest.
The piece as a whole is very beautiful and of fine craftsmanship.
