Scene Of Looting And Burning Of A City At Night, Oil On Canvas From The Late 18th Century

A small 18th-century Flemish painting on canvas depicting a fire in a city at night and a scene of looting enlivened by numerous figures.

The painting, rendered in chiaroscuro with subtle nuances and shades of orange, yellow, and brown, reveals flames leaping from houses, ruined buildings, and a dense crowd gathered, saving what they can while other figures attempt to escape through windows.
It could also be a scene of war or pillage, a city being sacked at night!
The theme is quite unusual and treated in the style of a miniature.
The canvas was relined in the 19th century on a charming little keyed fir stretcher with a maker's mark: I. Peel, Liner, in the style of a stamp.
The frame was changed at the same time to a simple frame of wood and gilt stucco.

A charming Flemish painting with a very beautiful composition.
