Pair Of Polychrome Terracotta Children's Bustes, Signed "bourgoin," Circa 1900
A charming pair of children’s busts in polychrome terracotta, each signed “Bourgoin” in relief on the back.
The two children are depicted in period costumes, wearing hats and bow ties. The delicate rendering of their faces, with their smiling and lively expressions, lends this set a great deal of charm.
Through their costumes and theatrical demeanor, these young figures whimsically evoke the elegance of the late 18th century and the Directoire period, in the spirit of the Incroyables and the Merveilleuses.
The particularly decorative polychrome paintwork is well preserved and shows no significant wear. The two busts are also notable for their impressive size and for having been preserved as a pair.
French work from the early 20th century, circa 1900.
