Louis XV Period Secretary Desk, In Fruitwood Marquetry

A Louis XV period secretary desk with an inverted ogee molding, veneered in native woods.
This secretary desk, also known as a cavetto, is typical of the style of the period.
It features a beautiful front opening with a wide, curved drop-front, revealing a simple interior adorned with drawers and a writing surface whose royal blue leather has been replaced.
The drop-front is supported by original wrought-iron hinges.
The lower section opens with two doors revealing a shelf and a lockable compartment.
It rests on four cabriole legs, the two front legs adorned with bronze sabots.
The lower rails are attractively shaped.
The sides and front are veneered with native woods: walnut, plum, and light cherry stringing. The veneering on the sides mirrors the movement of the front.
The original natural wood top is quite rare on this type of secretary desk, which was often made of marble.
Large drawer in A cyma molding runs under the top and above the drop-front.
The bronze keyhole escutcheons are original, and all the locks are functional.
The uprights are slightly beveled with attractive veneer work that harmoniously lightens the piece. The veneer rests on an oak frame.
The color contrast between the light walnut and the more contrasting plum is superb.
The central star motif on the drop-front is stunning and very decorative.
As it is a native wood veneer, we opted for a more understated wax finish rather than a flashy French polish.
A few minor restorations for use and maintenance have been carried out to repair some veneer chips. A horizontal crack remains on the lower part of the drop-front's bottom rail, as well as a vertical one in the middle of the left-hand door.
This piece is likely from the Grenoble region.

A very beautiful and rather unusual secretary desk with lovely, harmonious proportions, suitable for everyday use.
