Anne's Back Desk, 18th Century, Stamped Schwingkens
Artist: Gustave Schwingkens
A 16th-century Louis XV period slant-front desk stamped Gustave Schwingkens. The cabinetmaker, of German origin, arrived in Paris during the Regency period and obtained his master craftsmanship at the beginning of Louis XV's reign. He worked on Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine around 1745, then moved his workshop to Rue de Charonne. He primarily produced marquetry furniture. The desk features very fine gilt bronze mounts. It has three drawers on the front and four drawers inside. The two brass knobs on the lower drawers inside are not original. The locks are original to the piece. All the gilt bronze mounts are also original.
