Large Chinese Cloisonné Enamel Box - Early 20th Century

Important rectangular Chinese copper box adorned with a rich polychrome cloisonné enamel decoration on an ochre-red background.

The lid features, in the center of a multi-lobed medallion, the stylized character Shou, a symbol of longevity. It is surrounded by bats—traditional emblems of happiness and prosperity in Chinese iconography—as well as lotus flowers, scrollwork, and various auspicious motifs.

The red background is entirely enlivened by a fine geometric pattern. The four sides feature an abundant floral and symbolic decoration executed in a particularly vivid palette: turquoise blue, deep blue, green, yellow, pink, white, and black.

The interior is entirely glazed in blue, while the exposed edges highlight the box’s copper structure.

Its relatively large dimensions—uncommon for this type of piece—along with the richness of its decoration make it a fine example of early 20th-century Chinese cloisonné enamel art.

Good overall condition. Some subtle signs of wear and small chips in the enamel due to age, visible in the photographs, without significantly affecting the piece as a whole.
