Vintage Napoleon III-era Burgoté Travel Writing Set
A rare and superb travel writing case made of lacquered wood, painted, and inlaid with burgot shell.
A remarkable piece that is becoming increasingly rare to find in very good original condition.
This writing desk is made of black lacquered wood, against which the lovely painted and burgot-inlaid decorations stand out, giving it an incredible presence; the sheen of the shell inlay changes depending on the light and the orientation of this small accent piece.
The quality of the decoration is exceptionally refined, and the main panel depicts Windsor Castle.
It is, in fact, labeled in the lower right corner.
When you open the flap, you’ll discover an interior that serves as a writing desk and has retained its original crimson velvet lining with embossed floral designs.
A small tear was made in the velvet long ago to facilitate access to the storage compartment.
Beneath the small top flap are compartments, one of which serves as a pencil case and reveals a small hidden compartment underneath, as well as a compartment adorned with a lid featuring a mother-of-pearl knob for the powder compact and another identical, symmetrical one for the inkwell.
The entire piece features very fine woodwork, and the crossbars are all scroll-cut.
A truly beautiful and remarkable piece from the Napoleon III period, circa 1870–1880, when this type of small, burled wood furniture was very much in vogue and is rarely found in good condition on the market.
A beautiful writing desk and a fine collector’s item.
Dimensions:
