Study Of An Old Man's Head - Oil On Panel Italian Ecole, Late 16th - Early 18th Century
Beautiful and interesting head study depicting an old man, probably an expressive head or a preparatory study intended for the composition of a larger painting.
This oil on panel, in the Italian tradition, displays great expressive intensity. The face, treated with beautiful sensitivity, reveals real pictorial mastery in the rendering of complexions, glances and shadows. The tension of the neck, the melancholy expression of the model and the free treatment of the hair evoke the studio research of Italian painters of the late
XVIth century.
The figure appears to be dressed in a dark cloak with a wide collar, possibly trimmed with fur.
The antique panel shows some old restorations and repaints, probably from the 19th century, visible in places and participating in the life of the work.
Presence of a trace of an old signature or annotation in ink on the reverse, today
difficult to read.
The set is presented in an elegant Napoleon III period wood and gilded stucco frame, perfectly showcasing this small, characterful composition.
An attractive work, both decorative and expressive, typical of Italian physiognomy studies of the 16th and 18th centuries.
