Martaban Large Jar, Malaysia
A large, ovoid stoneware jar with a wide opening, glazed in brown.
It is decorated in yellow relief with two dragons surrounding the sacred pearl, interlacing foliage, a circular band with a Greek key pattern, and corded circles.
The interior is glazed in turquoise.
The decoration of this jar is inspired by ancient Chinese dragon-motif jars.
These jars, used for transporting food to Southeast Asia, were called Martaban, after a Burmese port on the trade routes.
While they appear to have been produced in various locations, one identified source is the town of Qishicun near Foshan in Guangdong, southern China. A LARGE MING-STYLE BROWN-GLAZED EARTHENWARE MARTABAN-TYPE JAR, China, Qing Dynasty, 19th century, In the Ming style. Southeast Asia - Malaysia, 20th century. Martaban-type jars were used to store food and water in homes and on ships.

There are a few chips on the neck, and the jar was pierced with a hole long ago to serve as a large cachepot.
