Lamentation Over The Dead Christ, Oil On Canvas, 18th Century

An important oil painting on canvas depicting the Lamentation over the Dead Christ. Taken down from the Cross, still bleeding, the body of
Christ is laid out on the shroud. Everyone has left the place of execution; on Calvary at the foot of the Cross, only Jesus's relatives and closest friends remain. The women depicted are the Madonna, Mary Magdalene, and the Virgin's two sisters, both named Mary, daughters of Saint Anne, while the men may be Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. This is a human and sentimental interpretation of great dramatic pathos, highlighted by the use of dark colors, heightened by the smoky evening landscape in the background and the presence, at the bottom, of the instruments of martyrdom: the nails torn from the cross and the crown of thorns.

Emilian School, early 18th century. Accompanied by a beautiful contemporary frame, also from Emilia, lacquered in imitation wood and gilded, in perfect condition.
