Artist: Peintre Romain Du 18e Siècle, Suiveur De Giovan Battista Salvi Dit "il Sassoferrato" (1609 - 1685)
A follower of Giovan Battista Salvi, known as "il Sassoferrato" (1609 –1685)
Madonna with the Sleeping Child

18th-century Roman painter

Oil on canvas
Dimensions: canvas 64 x 50 cm, framed 76 x 62 cm.

This delicate depiction of the Madonna adoring the Child conveys the full human dimension and the tenderness of the maternal atmosphere: Mary holds the sleeping Child close in a tender embrace; he brushes against her cheek, wrapped and protected by her cloak and even by a fold of her veil.

The painterly style and composition are reminiscent of the school of Giovan Battista Salvi, known as “Sassoferrato,” who distinguished himself specifically through this subject, depicting the Virgin in a humble and deeply earthly pose, rendered in simple shades of white, red, and blue, with delicate shading on the faces and hands.
This iconographic prototype enjoyed such success that it became the model for countless devotional works throughout the 17th and 18th centuries; it was particularly prized for private commissions due to its striking tenderness and formal perfection, especially in the depiction of the faces.
A native of the Marche region, Salvi pursued his career in Rome, following the tenets of classicist religious painting of the Bolognese school of Reni, Carracci, and Domenichino, yet managing to develop an independent and, as a result, highly distinctive style.
In very good overall condition; there are a few scattered small restorations and some areas where the paint layer has been removed. Framed in a beautiful gilded frame.
