Louis XVI Period Clock With Grape-picking Children (from Bordeaux Or Burgundy)
Rare and amusing gilded bronze clock depicting child grape-pickers.
The movement with enamel dial, Arabic numerals has two gilded pierced hands.
It is set in a base surrounded by a ribbon, vine branches, bunches of grapes and laurel twists.
On the side, a child mounted on a ladder crushes grapes in a vat decorated with a garland and resting on scrolled feet. To the right, another child drinks the grape juice from the vat's spigot.
The ensemble stands on a bronze molded base set on a blackened wood plinth.
The front and side edges of the plinth are inlaid with a frieze of openwork interlacing with grapevines and bunches of grapes.
