A Louis XV Period Solid Mahogany Writing Desk, Stamped D. Genty, At Waist Height.
Artist: Genty Denis, Maître Le 13 Mars 1754
A rare mahogany secretary desk at waist height, opening at the front with a drop-front featuring two molded panels framed by shaped crossbars.
Inside, three large drawers on each side flank three shelves and a writing drawer. In the lower section, two paneled and molded doors, both inside and out, open onto a chest fixed within the frame of the piece. It closes with a five-point lock, one of which has a secret opening mechanism. The interior is reinforced with interlaced iron strips.
The recessed uprights are rounded and molded. The sides have molded panels, and the horizontal rails are shaped and molded.
The piece rests on a plinth.
It is topped with a Royal red marble slab with a corbin beak edge (repaired in the center).
It has a very fine three-point lock with two bolts for the drop-front; the keys are clover-shaped and different for the drop-front, the door, and the chest.
The escutcheons are in gilt bronze, including one at the bottom with a crowned C.
It is stamped D GENTY on the front left upright with the JME initials and also with the JME initials on the bottom of the writing drawer.
Louis XV period.
Very fine, meticulous, and refined craftsmanship.
Certainly a control cabinet for storing documents in the upper part and very secure at the bottom, constructed and assembled with thick crossbars on the back and sides which form the safe inside.
