Morion Of The Munich Civic Guard Late 16th Century
It's a beautiful morion, typically Germanic in the style knownlocally known as "Schwarz und Weiss", i.e. "Black andwhite". Morions were used from the 2nd half of the 16th century to the mid17th century, but the "Black and White" models are typically Germanic. The style of decoration on this one is typical of the Munich Civic Guard.
According to the style of the work and its general silhouette, it can be dated from the second half of the 16th century or the very early 17th century.
The skull is in 2 parts, as is almost always the case with these helmets (contrary to what many authors have written). Forging in two halves made manufacture infinitely easier. The two halves meet at the central comb , where one overlaps the other, and are riveted at the front and back edges. The decoration features a large fleur-de-lys. It is stamped by hammering.
A small plume holder is present at the rear of the helmet.
Near the edge of the helmet, five brass rosettes on the right and three on the left (two missing) are crossed by iron rivets. These rosettes are much more elaborate than on the majority of morions. The inner leathers are still present.
The left edge features an old repair with a riveted steel plate. This repair is very old and probably dates back to the time of the morion's use, as the patina of the metal is exactly the sameone as on the rest of the item.
Small 6 cm x 0.5 cm loss at the level of th ecomb overlap.
The object as a whole is characteristic of its period, its slightly "stocky" shape allows to to define it as an early model. It will fit perfectlyin a Haute Epoque(middle age-Renaissance) decoration.
