The style is rather Italian, but the typically Germanic blade, with its imperial mark of a cross-shaped globe, indicates manufacture in connection with Solingen. It can thus be attributed to an origin in Southern Germany or Northern Italy. The overall shape is typical of the 17th century.
BLADE : After a strong ricasso that widens from the point directly against the guard, it has a hexagonal cross-section with two edges. Four fullers on each face of the ricasso. Four centimeters from the guard, on one face, is a mark of a cross-shaped globe.
Blade length = 20.3 cm, width at the ricasso 1.3 cm, thickness at the ricasso = 5.8 mm.
CROSS GUARD : It is a small, sturdy guard with two straight quillons ending in bulbs.
POMMEL : It is bulbous and features the same decoration as the quillons. The tang of the blade is riveted directly to the pommel.
GRIP : It is made of iron, with a lozenge pattern reminiscent of certain doublets worn at the time.
The entire weapon has an interesting patina, which I have chosen to preserve, but it could certainly be polished to give it a much shinier appearance.
