Large Italian Rapier In Taza, Blade With Motto
This is a beautiful and long rapier called "a la taza" in Italian style that can be dated to the mid-17th century. The very deep bowl of the Taza corresponds to Italian taste. The very large arms "finger rings" and the space inside the bowl indicate that this weapon was probably designed to be handled with a gloved hand.
BLADE: IT after a short ricasso of 7 mm takes on a diamond-shaped section. On each face, a central fuller in which is engraved the motto: " + SPERMIT - HUMILIA - VIRTUS + " surrounded by a thin line of dots partly erased. This inscription can be literally translated as "He/she bears witness to humble virtues" the expression "humble virtues" having in the 17th century not the modern meaning of humility, but that of "simple and discreet, effective under a modest appearance" the "he/she" of the translated inscription probably referring to the weapon itself which under a discreet appearance hides a certain effectiveness.
Length of the blade = 100.5 cm from the bowl, 109 cm from the crossguard , width at the ricasso = 2.4 cm, thickness at the ricasso = 8.6 mm, point of balance at 5 cm from the edge of the cup.
GUARD : Deep bowl, presenting near its edge a hollow circular groove, 1.2 cm wide which underlines the folded fluted edge called "breaker-point". Diameter of the bowl 14 cm The quillons are straight, cylindro-conical, and end with multiple rings and tassels. The fully functional arms (finger rings) are securely attached to the bowl by screws whose heads are chiseled in the shape of a 4-leaf clover. Width of the quillons 29.3 cm The knuckle bow has the same decoration as the quillons, it ends near the pommel in a flattened "squirrel tail".
POMMEL: It is ovoid in shape and ends with a button on which the tang of the blade is riveted
GRIP: It is coil-shaped and is surrounded by a complex wire binding, alternating thin and thicker twists.
The braided ferrules called "Turk's heads" are present, in perfect condition.
