Venetian Panel, Late 16th Century: The Flagellation Of Christ At The Column
Venetian school, late 16th – early 17th century
Christ at the Column
Oil on walnut panel, 31 x 43 cm
Antique frame, 43 x 59 cm
Set within a dimly lit setting, the painting depicts the episode of the Flagellation of Christ. This passage is recounted in all four Gospels, constituting one of the final episodes of Jesus’ trial, prior to the crowning with thorns. With the Counter-Reformation came the introduction of a common iconographic scheme depicting Christ bound to a tall column, thus evoking the relic of the Column of the Flagellation brought to Rome in 1223 by Cardinal Giovanni Colonna and preserved in the Basilica of Santa Prassede.
The contorted figure of the tortured Christ is depicted here at the centre of the scene, with a striking characterisation conveyed by his deathly pallor and bruised face, thus creating a symbolic distinction between the pallor of Jesus and the dark figures surrounding him, particularly that of the executioner on the right, ready to deliver another lash of the scourge. The other two henchmen in the background, partially swallowed up by the shadows, are also captured in the act of forcefully delivering further blows to Christ’s back.
The panel is in a good state of preservation. It shows retouching and repainting.
