Workshop Vincente Masip 1475 - 1545 Valencia, Spain 'holly Family' Circa 1510 - 1520
Vicente Masip, known as "Masip the Elder," was a Spanish Renaissance painter, born in Andilla around 1475 and died in Valencia in 1545. The work, executed in tempera on a poplar panel around 1510-1520, shows the influence of Leonardo da Vinci in the contorted body of the Christ Child and the gentle face of the Madonna, along with the Spanish taste for vibrant colors. This style appeared among Masip's followers after the return in 1516 of Fernando Yáñez de la Almedina and Hernando de los Llanos, who arrived in Valencia. They had trained in Italy in the circle of Leonardo da Vinci. Vicente Masip then reached his definitive pictorial language in the style of the Quattrocento. ** I am attaching X-ray images of the artwork showing its condition at the time of acquisition.
