Narcisse Guilbert - Old Mill In Duclair
Artist: Narcisse Guilbert (1878-1942)
Narcisse Guilbert (1878-1942) - Old Mill at Duclair, 1939.
Oil on reinforced panel, signed lower left and countersigned, located, and dated by Guilbert on the reverse. Gilt frame. Tiny crack in the paint, restored.
Artwork: 36.5 x 44.5 cm ; with frame: 65 x 56 cm.
A major painter of the Rouen School, Guilbert studied under Joseph Delattre, then under Philippe Zacharie. He exhibited at the Rouen Salon from 1907 to 1936 and regularly at the Galerie Legrip.
Here, Guilbert presents a panel depicting a mill at Duclair in 1939. As was his custom, he employs clear, resonant harmonies and powerful colors, particularly the intense blue of the water balanced by the pink of the flowers and the gold of the millstone. The expressive style is characteristic of his work from the 1930s, a period in which he favoured close framing and intimate subjects.
