Léonard Bordes - Harvest Under A Stormy Sky
Artist: Léonard Bordes (1898-1969)
Léonard BORDES (1898-1969) - Harvest Under a Stormy Sky.
Oil on panel, signed lower left. Montparnasse frame.
50.5 x 61.5 cm.
Encouraged to pursue painting by Jacques-Émile Blanche, a family friend, Léonard Bordes (1898-1969) studied under Philippe Zacharie at the Rouen School of Fine Arts, where he associated with Thieulin and Le Trividic. During his travels in Normandy in the 1930s, Othon Friesz and Vlaminck noticed him and visited his Rouen studio. Deeply affected by the destruction of Rouen during the Second World War, his canvases became darker and focused more on the land and its people. He made this shift in 1945, the year he met Gaston Sébire. The two men travelled to many places in Normandy and Spain to create paintings.
This oil painting, depicting a threatening weather over a field, is characteristic of the artist's expressionist production.
