Hammered Iron Tsuba – Mixed Inlay Decoration – Edo Period (17th–18th Century)
An elegant small mokkō-gata-shaped tsuba made of finely hammered iron (tsuchime-ji), displaying a beautiful, deep, golden-brown patina that is both uniform and unaltered.
The craftsmanship reveals a refined asymmetrical composition, characteristic of the naturalistic taste of the Edo period. The decoration combines various applied and inlaid alloys—likely shakudō and gilt brass/copper—featuring stylized floral medallions, an engraved plant motif suggesting bamboo or grasses, and delicate spot inlays suggesting dew or seeds. The overall effect is a subtle contrast between the simplicity of the iron and the preciousness of the applied elements.
It is accompanied by a regularly shaped nakago-ana and two hitsu-ana (kozuka and kogai). The piece is unsigned (mumei).
Attributed to the Kaga school.
