Facial mask with refined features, covered in kaolin, used in Bwami society initiation rites.
These masks, called lukwakongo, were used to illustrate principles of wisdom, justice, or moral conduct. They were shown to initiates during rituals - rarely worn, but always conveying a teaching.
The white kaolin symbolizes purity, the ancestral world, and knowledge. The mask’s formal simplicity reflects the importance of meaning over appearance.
Light wood, kaolin.
