Clock Allegorical Female Figure 19th
This Napoleon III period clock, dating from around 1850, elegantly
illustrates the eclectic and theatrical taste characteristic of the
Second Empire, where decorative architecture harmoniously engages with
ornamental sculpture. The composition is based on a richly structured,
symmetrical design,
blending finely chased and gilded bronze with light marble elements
that provide contrast and visual balance.
The circular white enamel dial is set within an architecturally inspired apse reminiscent of a classical façade, punctuated by molded frames and panels adorned with applied motifs. The lavishly worked gilt bronze mounts display a decorative vocabulary inspired by the Louis XV and Louis XVI repertoire: foliate scrolls, floral garlands, clasps, and rocaille scrolls enliven the surface with great virtuosity.
Dominating the clock, a patinated bronze female figure forms the true focal point of the composition. Lying naturally on a picturesquely rendered rocky mound, she adopts a supple and graceful posture, characterized by a slight twist of the torso and a delicate resting arm, creating an impression of contemplative relaxation. The finely striated drapery follows the contours of the body and accentuates the fluidity of movement while revealing the sculptor's skill in rendering textures. The gentle and introspective expression is distinguished by a subtle tilt of the head and a serene, downward gaze. The delicate features, half-closed eyelids, and slight smile lend the figure a poetic and dreamy dimension, typical of 19th-century allegorical figures. The hairstyle, composed of artfully arranged, wavy locks, contributes to this impression of timeless grace.
Original mechanism intact, without modification. Strikes the hours and half-hours on an antique bell with a clear and authentic sound.
