Casual Silk Satin Camisole With Lilac Trim - France Circa 1785
Circa 1785-1790, France. A silk satin caraco with basques, edged in lilac with a quincunx floral design, dating from the late Louis XVI period. This caraco, known as the "negligent" caraco, features small square basques and long, flared sleeves. The front is open in a triangle to reveal a boned corset or a stomacher that could be pinned in place. The neckline is adorned with an applied pink silk ribbon, gathered in the Polish style with box pleats at the back (minor damage and slight discoloration to the ribbon). This caraco is fully lined in its original ecru linen and bears a handwritten inventory number in ink indicating 11325 (?). The back is cut in a triangle with a small "bricole" at the basques for attaching the top of the skirt. There is very slight discoloration of the satin, but the garment is stable, unaltered, and without major damage (no holes or stains). Very good overall condition in terms of color and preservation. Dimensions: Equivalent to size 12-14 years today, height 43 cm, shoulders 36 cm, sleeves 57 cm, chest 78 cm, waist 60 cm.
