"Long Cashmere Wool Shawl With Bayadere Pattern - France, Provence, Circa 1860-1880"
Circa 1860-1880, France, Provence. Long striped wool cashmere shawl known as a Bayadère, as seen in Provençal painting, particularly in ex-votos. Woven with wide stripes in saffron, Adrianople red, yellow-green, black, and white, fringed on the two longer sides (a rare feature). Originally designed to be worn over Second Empire dresses with full skirts, it can be folded in half and provides excellent warmth for a cozy winter! It can also be used as a decorative throw, bed cover, or sofa throw. There are a few very small moth holes (less than 2 mm each), but otherwise, it is structurally very resistant to handling. The colors are as fresh as they were originally. In very good condition. From the Provençal collection of Daniel Audry. Dimensions: 160 cm x 330 cm
