Portrait Of A Young Woman With Roses, Pouf Hairstyle, Louis XVI Period.

An elegant portrait depicting a young woman, shown in bust form, turned slightly to the right, her gaze gentle and confident. The figure is enlivened by a delicate garland of roses arranged across her bodice and echoed in her high, powdered hairstyle, known as a "pouf." These flowers, rendered with a free and luminous touch, bring freshness and vibrancy to the composition while remaining true to the gallant style of the 18th century. The finely modeled flesh tones feature subtly rosy cheeks and a fair complexion, which is further emphasized by the subtly modulated brown-green background, isolating the figure and accentuating her presence. The high, structured hairstyle, adorned with rosebuds and long side curls, reflects the fashions prevalent in the 1770s under the influence of leading Parisian hairdressers. This hairstyle is an emblematic stylistic marker of the early years of Louis XVI's reign. The work is firmly rooted in the tradition of French society portraiture of the second half of the 18th century, at the crossroads of the late Louis XV style and the emerging Neoclassical taste. It testifies to the production of workshops active in the wake of the great Parisian portrait painters of the period, striking a balance between decorative elegance and naturalistic observation. The oval format, particularly favored for female portraits, reinforces the intimate and refined character of the representation. Note: This portrait was acquired together with a male portrait of the same format and presented in an identical frame. Although there is no evidence to suggest that they depict a pair, the two works form a particularly harmonious set and could constitute an elegant decorative pair. Condition: Antique canvas in excellent condition. Fine, regular craquelure consistent with age. Old handwritten inscriptions, partially erased, on the reverse of the stretcher. Later molded and gilded wooden frame. Dimensions: Visible area: 63 × 52 cm; Framed area: 71.5 × 60 cm
