Object description :

"Large Louis XVI, Directoire Style Mahogany Screen. "
An important four-panel screen in solid mahogany, dating from the Louis XVI – Directoire period, likely from the late 18th or very early 19th century. Its particularly generous dimensions suggest that this screen was designed to structure an interior space and create a true partition, going beyond the simple role of a decorative screen. It perfectly reflects the use of screens in grand interiors of the late Ancien Régime and the Directoire period, where the screen became an integral element of interior architecture. Each panel is composed of two rectangular sections separated by a horizontal rail. The upper section is highlighted by a delicately arched top rail, an elegant and perfectly characteristic design of classicism. This low profile, with its continuous and softened curve, gives the whole a balanced and refined silhouette, while visually lightening the structure. The frames feature a fine, understated, and discreet interior molding, precisely highlighting the panels without ever disrupting the purity of the lines. The woodwork demonstrates meticulous craftsmanship, indicative of a high-quality piece intended for an elegant interior. The panels are upholstered in a satin fabric with vertical bayadere stripes in a soft, pale blue hue. While not silk, this textile deliberately evokes the striped and ribbed fabrics popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, offering a luminous, elegant effect that perfectly complements the warmth of the mahogany. The screen retains all of its original hardware, including brass hinges that ensure smooth and complete movement of the panels. This original set of hardware is a significant element of authenticity and quality. The varnished wood is in good condition: sound, stable, and displaying a beautiful patina. The more recent fabric is in perfect condition and particularly enhances the structure, proportions, and architectural design of the screen. With its monumental size, the quality of its mahogany, the elegance of its arched crossbars, and the harmony of its textile decoration, this screen is a statement piece, ideal for a large living room, library, bedroom, or reception area, in a classic interior or a more contemporary setting.
