Silver And Vermeil Ciborium – Jules Jamain And Eugène Chevron – 19th Century – Paris

Silver and Vermeil Ciborium – Jules Jamain and Eugène Chevron – 19th century – Paris.

An elegant ciborium in solid silver and vermeil, in the Neoclassical style, resting on a wide circular foot with finely engraved decoration.

Description:

The foot, with a pronounced central boss, is adorned with a radiating design of finely chased and matted water leaves and palmettes, alternating with smooth reserves. The rim is highlighted with a row of pearls.
The stem features a central knot with a stylized geometric design, framed by molded rings.
The cup, simple and harmonious, is highlighted by a beaded frieze below the rim.
The interior is entirely vermeiled.
The domed lid echoes the ornamental vocabulary of the foot (palmettes and water leaves) and is surmounted by a molded Latin cross resting on a small foot. An old engraving appears on the cyma molding of the base: “C. Peeters – G. Adriaensens”, presumably the donors.

Dimensions: Height: 22.5 cm - Weight: 272.3 g

Hallmarks
1. Standard mark - Presence of the Minerva hallmark (Minerva's head in profile within an octagonal cartouche). This is the French hallmark for 1st standard silver (.950), in use from 1838.
2. Maker's mark - Lozenge-shaped mark bearing the letters J & C (reading to be confirmed with a magnifying glass), attributable to the silversmiths: Jules Jamain and Eugène Chevron, Parisian silversmiths active in the second half of the 19th century, specializing in religious silverware.

The stylistic consistency (late Neoclassicism), the quality of execution, and the Minerva hallmark confirm production around 1860–1880.
