Episcopal Ciborium In Silver-gilt With Amethyst Cabochons. Master Silversmith Edmond Lesage, Paris
Episcopal ciborium in silver-gilt with amethyst cabochons - Master silversmith Edmond Lesage, Paris.
Important episcopal ciborium in silver-gilt, richly decorated with cabochon amethysts set in bezels, arranged on the lid, knop, and foot.
Description:
The interior cup is entirely gilded, in accordance with liturgical practice. The exterior has a satin finish, understated and elegant, enhanced by an engraved frieze on the rim of the cup.
The domed lid is surmounted by a Latin cross with trefoil ends.
The circular knop, punctuated with amethyst cabochons, intentionally evokes episcopal symbolism (liturgical violet).
The flared foot features the same decoration of cabochons set in engraved polylobed frames.
Beneath the base is an engraved inscription: "Monseigneur de Grammont Pierre Théophile -Aline -Alia -Henriette- Anne Claude- Marie -Jean," indicating a specific commission or episcopal destination.
Hallmark identification:
1) Maker's mark: Horizontal lozenge containing the letters EL on either side of a central figure (stylized representation), corresponding to: Edmond Lesage, goldsmith in Paris, active late 19th – early 20th century. This mark confirms the attribution.
2) Guarantee mark: Minerva 1st standard (950‰)
3) Other guarantee mark: A small head in an octagonal frame is also visible, probably: Secondary control or assay mark.
Dimensions: Height: 26 cm - Weight: 563 g
Condition:
Very good overall condition. Slight wear to the gilt. Amethysts intact.
High-quality Parisian work, late 19th century.
