A truly neo-classical curiosity, this beautiful desk object from the first half of the 19th century is a milky-veined onyx obelisk adorned with an 18th-century cameo profile depicting Scipio Africanus. A decorative element of great refinement, this obelisk rests on its richly decorated pedestal of various assembled marbles and bronzes. This unique piece is embellished with gilt bronze foliage, a ring, cascading fruit, a laurel branch, the cameo itself within a bronze wreath, and a frieze of vine tendrils encircling the base of the plinth, which is clad in black Carrara marble with pink veining. Meticulously assembled, this piece possesses all the preciousness of a unique and elegant designer object.
