A PAIR OF GILT AND PATINATED BRONZE RENAISSANCE-STYLE EWERS, NAPOLEON III. A pair of Neo-Renaissance style ewers in gilt and patinated bronze, each with a body decorated with a frieze of musical putti, richly adorned with high-relief scenes and abundant ornamentation, including stylized foliage in relief, palmette friezes, and vine tendrils framing a frieze of putti representing the quadrivium (the four mathematical sciences in ancient theory: arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy). Each scrolled handle is surmounted by a cherub in the round and scrolling vine tendrils, terminating in a satyr's head. Each ewer rests on a round foot decorated with fluting and vine tendrils. The bronze has a dark and gilt patina. Height 59.5 cm, diameter of the feet 14 cm. Late 19th century period, French work circa 1880-1900. Good condition, missing screw for fixing a cherub to be restored, oxidation at the base of the feet.
