This work, published during the reign of Louis XV and subsequently bound during the reign of Louis XVI, is in a handsome octavo format, bound in full red morocco, with covers framed by a triple fillet, smooth spines with the interlaced monogram of Louis XVI, pinkish-orange morocco titles with inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, and stamped with the arms of King Louis XVI. This copy, in perfect condition, comes from the Royal Library and comprises two works: "Les Jardins d'Ornemens," or the French Georgics, a poem in four cantos, followed by Philosophical Poems. New Edition. Paris, no date indicated, and in Paris for the first work, at Deterville, Bookseller, 16 rue du Battoir. And for the following, Education, a Poem in Four Discourses, in Paris at Guillyn's, at the entrance to the Quai des Augustins, at the sign of the Golden Lily. 1757. A rarity for this personal book in mint condition, which is not a present copy. Written by François-Etienne Gouge de Cessières. It is a Poem in Four Cantos that deals with ornamental gardens and their importance in 18th-century French society; the book explores the different aspects of the creation and maintenance of ornamental gardens. Or, The French Georgics is an important work for those interested in the History of Horticulture and Landscape Design in France, as well as 18th-century French Literature. A rare item from a prestigious provenance, priced accordingly (a Holy Week gift or an Almanac), sells for that price, and it's not necessarily a book that belonged to Louis XVI.
