Rare Set Of Three-volume Pleadings By Louis Servin, Dating From The Reign Of Henry Iv.
Artist: Louis Servin
A beautiful first edition published between 1603 and 1608, wonderfully bound in fine and rare, fresh bindings from the reign of Henry IV. This set comprises three substantial duodecimo volumes, bound in full tinted calf, with spines richly decorated with gilt tooling and fleurons within compartments of a raised bands, tan morocco titles, gilt volume numbers, and red edges. The titles and typographical elements are neat and two-tone, adorned with beautiful, repetitive portraits of the King in volumes 2 and 3, engraved by Léonard Gauthier. These typographical elements punctuate this remarkable edition, a vivid testament to the customs of the good King's era; tailpieces, initial letters, and headpieces embellish this work. A rare collection spanning over four centuries of the reign of Henry IV: the "Pleadings of Mr. Louis Servin, Councilor to the King in his Council of State, and his Advocate General in his Parliament," with the judgments rendered therein. Published in Paris by Jean de Heuqueville, rue Saint-Jacques, at the sign of La Paix. 1603-1608 (1603-1608). (Minor worming at the beginning of the first volume, not affecting the text). This important collection recounts the procedural disputes concerning politics and law, and relates the conflicts between people of rank and the arbitrations of the Court; a treasure trove of history.
